demonstrating Kendō, Japanese Sword Fencing
Phoenix Kendō Kai was officially established in 1990, when they applied to the Kendo Federation of the United States of America - KFUSA - for a mentor. Maki Miyahara, hatchi‑dan or 8th Dan, of the Southern California Kendo Federation, invited the group to practice at the Pasadena Japanese Cultural Institute and after meeting the members,
agreed to supervise their training.
The Kai remains under the guidance of James Yamasaki-sensei,
the present day senior instructor of the Pasadena dojo, following Miyahara-sensei's retirement.
The Southern California Kendo Federation is one of 15 regional organizations that comprise the All United States Kendo Federation - AUSKF - following the merger of KFUSA
and BKR - the Beikoku Kendo Renmai - in 1995.
Maki Hiroyuki Miyahara
Miyahara-sensei's abilities as a teacher, was recognized with the shogo or honorary title of hanshi, Senior Instructor, by the AUSKF.
